Interview at SyFy Portal

The attempt was valiant, but brief.

The people behind "Stargate SG-1" are no longer looking to finance and broadcast an 11th season of the show, and instead will work exclusively on SG-1 movies that could become an annual occurrence as early as within the next 12 months.

GateWorld previously reported that filming for the first SG-1 movie is set to begin April 15 in Vancouver, B.C., where the series is currently shot, while the second movie with a time-traveling story will begin shooting soon after, on June 1.

MGM, which owns the production rights to SG-1, was trying to shop the series around as the second-best property the studio owns next to James Bond, according to GateWorld, but met with a cool reception for the series, which will wrap up its 10th and final season early next year. The two movies are slated to be direct-to-DVD, with more that could follow depending on how well sales go.

In the meantime, the future of the Stargate franchise itself remains bright. "Stargate: Atlantis" is scheduled to come back for a fourth season in late 2007, a massive multiplayer online role playing game called "Stargate Worlds" is in development, there is talk about doing a sequel to the 1994 "Stargate" movie that started it all (even if it ignores what happened in the television spinoffs), and there are reports that a third Stargate series is in the works.

Both "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate: Atlantis" will return to SciFi Channel in April.
