Archetypes

Stargate Worlds is in the Production Phase. Therefore, any information on this wiki (including the information in the developer quotes) cannot be taken as concrete facts, and may still change. |
Stargate Worlds is breaking with the traditional Mage-Warrior-Healer triumvirate of fantasy MMO's.[1] The archetypes are somewhat different to those traditionally found in MMORPG's. There will be no specific healer class, as everyone has the ability to be a medic, although some archetypes will be better than others at healing and reviving others.[2] Opportunity for specialization within classes, and the ability of more than one class to perform certain functions within a group, should lead to more flexibility in grouping. [1] A robust tech tree will make each class far more customizable and replayable.[3][4]
Archetypes in SGW are a bit more flexible than in other MMO's. Player test out many abilities as they begin their character. Each archetype will have three specialization trees to mix and match skill from. This will define a particular play style over time.[5][6] No end game instance will need a particular class to be successful, although the developers have yet to rule out a particular play style being necessary for certain instances.[7]
The classes are Archaeologist, Asgard, Goa'uld, Jaffa, Scientist, Soldier and Commando. Until the game is released, this class list and the classes themselves are subject to change. [1] Stay tuned as further information comes to hand.
Both the scientist and the archaeologist will excel in non-combat gameplay with various types of puzzles to solve and gain access to new and exciting advances.[8] In addition there are likely to be quests specifically for these and other archetypes.[9]
Each archetype will have its own starting area. In addition to learning how to play each archetype, this starting zone will also give the players a rich backstory that comes from 10 seasons of Stargate SG1.[10]

[edit] Archaeologist
As an expert in ancient cultures and languages, the Archaeologist has become a valuable addition to off-world exploration teams. This is the Daniel Jackson archetype. With their extensive knowledge, they will be able to 'blend in with the locals' to gather intelligence or to ambush the enemy.[1] It is likely that the archaeologist will also be able to engage in diplomacy, something discussed by the developers previously.[11] Archaeologists can also be quite adept in aggro management, perhaps by their being superb negotiators or by being good at hiding. In addition to their ability to solve puzzles, this makes them a good choice for a soloing class.[1] In addition to using their diplomatic abilities in PvE situations they may also be able to use them to advantage in PvP interactions, although how this will work is unknown. These puzzles will be in the form of minigames.
Specialization Trees[12]
- Sociology
- Anthropology
- Archaeology
[edit] Asgard
While physically frail, the Asgard are masters of technology and will have a strong science ability.[13] They depend on drones technology to survive and thrive. By calling upon different types of drones to attack, defend, heal, or analyze, the Asgard becomes a true jack-of-all-trades. When faced with dire circumstances, the Asgard can also bring in their mighty starships to devastate the enemy with orbital bombardments.[1] This will be a special attack.[14] By being able to fit into a number of different roles, it is likely the Asgard will choose their 'class' by specializing in different types of the drone technologies. The Asgard will be a faction specific class, disallowing evil alignments.[15] As an Asgard player advances in levels, he/she is able to upgrade the drones by a couple of different means.[16] The drones will be incapacitated with the player, and will not die.[17] In effect, one can say, the Asgard and their drones are one.[18]
[edit] Commando
By giving up access to the variety of weapons a Soldier uses, a commando gains access to stealth, demolitions, and the sniper rifle. With these sneaky attacks, the commando can disrupt, confuse, and neutralize enemies. In addition to being able to stealth, commandos also have technology to detect stealthed enemies. The commando will be at least one of the archetypes able to deploy and detect traps, making them a valuable member of any team planning an ambush. Commandos can be compared to the highly specialized units in modern military, like the Delta Force. [1] [19]
[edit] Goa'uld
Goa'uld will be more powerful than other players in the game.[20] Whether players will be able to reach the level of power and influence of a System Lord is unknown. How these powerful Goa'uld will be balanced in PvP, and indeed how PvP will be balanced in general has not been revealed. The Goa'uld will gain much of their power from their servants. From the TV series, we see how Goa'uld such as Hathor and Seth can easily seduce new servants with powerful chemicals. With the ability to command several different types of minions, the Goa'uld can become almost as versatile as the Asgard. Goa'uld will be able to specialize their character to both be adept at the science features in the game or make them more combat oriented.[21] These minions will include Jaffa and possibly human servants.[22] In addition to their minions, Goa'uld also have access to poisons that can be used to cripple their enemies. They can also specialize in Ashrak technologies, such as phase cloaking, allowing them to become masters of stealthy attacks.[1] As the evil counterparts to the Asgard, the Goa'uld may be able to call in their Ha'tak motherships to bombard the enemy as a special attack.[23] The Goa'uld character will be the symbiote and players will, at times and at a "cost", be able to choose to enter a new host. This changing of host only changes the appearance of the player, nothing else.[24] However, player Goa'uld will not be able to take over other players or Unas.[25][26]
The Goa'uld are essentially the pet class of SGW.[27] Goa'uld pets come in few varieties, and the variety actually sets the individuality of the pet. Some pets excel at range combat, some excel at melee combat, and other pets can even heal or buff or do these other things for their master. As for customization of these pets, there will be a naming capability. There may be something else coming too on customization, but probably nothing drastic.[28]
The Goa'uld that the player can control in SGW are a new breed. They see that the 'posing as god' theatrics didn't quite work in the end, and thus are a more 'hands on' type of Goa'uld. Their story is something new.[29] The player Goa'uld characters are of a different faction than the System Lords, and are all derived from the same queen, like the Tok'ra.[30]It seems that Ba'al will be part of this new Goa'uld faction.[31] As seen in the screenshots and concept arts, these new Goa'uld have an Egyptian feel to them, but also some new waves of fashion.
The servants of Goa'uld will be nameable.[32]
Specialization Trees[33]
- Battle Lord
The Battle Lord focuses on combat skills and abilities that have a direct effect on the battlefield. Of the three Goa’uld paths, the Battle Lord has the widest access to weapons. The Battle Lord is the New Mind Goa’uld’s ultimate soldier, as intelligent and insightful in combat as he is powerful and shrewd.
- Servant Lord
The Servant Lord is the pet master Goa’uld. He is never seen without an entourage. This can range from his Lotar personal servant up to, at high levels, Kull warriors called on to take out the Goa’uld’s enemies. The Servant Lord’s abilities focus on controlling and enhancing the Goa’uld’s pets.
- Ashrak
The Ashrak is a master assassin. He is a trained killer who over time masters stealth, devastating melee attacks and deadly poisons. He is not as versatile in combat as the Battle Lord nor does he have the minions commanded by the Servant Lord, but when you need someone dead right now, no one gets the job done as efficiently as the Ashrak.
[edit] Jaffa
Jaffa in the game are like Jaffa in the show: big and tough. In addition to its devastating ranged attack, the Jaffa staff weapon can also be used in melee combat. Displaying excellent solidarity and teamwork, Jaffa can use their oaths to strengthen their allies, especially other Jaffa. With their great physical strength, Jaffa are highly resistant to special attacks and can continue fighting even when injured.[1] Free Jaffa are on Tretonin automatically and Loyal Jaffa have a symbiote.[34] There will also be some differences in stats depending whether you are a free Jaffa or a loyal one.[35]
[edit] Scientist
Being a combination of pure scientist and engineer, [9] this is the Samantha Carter archetype. When exploring new worlds, this class is definitely handy to have on hand if you encounter advanced technology. Scientists can specialize in analyzing, repairing, and using technologies. They can also use new technologies to craft personal upgrades. Their utilization on the battlefield revolves around their ability to construct devices such as gun turrets, shields, and target inhibitors. They can also specialize in healing and resurrection technology. Like the archaeologist, the scientist can solve puzzles, but only those of a technological nature.[1] These puzzles will be in the form of minigames.
Specialization Trees[12]
- Support Technologies
Ability Gravity Well: Acts as a trap for opponents.
- Robotic Technologies
Ability Turret Attack: Draw Fire: Fires in such a way as to draw fire allowing teammates to flank.
- Medical Technologies
Ability Hazardous EMP: Loads an EMP dart that disrupts mechanical opponents.
[edit] Soldier
As a battlefield veteran, the soldier is your best protection when stepping through the stargate. They have the ability to specialize in a variety of weapons including grenades, automatic weapons, machine guns, mortars, and rocket launchers. Their job is to unleash raw firepower into enemies. With additional training, they can also learn basic healing, the use of alien weaponry, and teams leadership.[1] The Soldier will be able to specialize in Command, Automatic Weapons and Heavy Weapons. Command skills will allow the player limited use of healing technologies and skills to increase team performance. Heavy and Automatic Weapons skills will increase a player's performance with each of these weapons classes.[36]
[edit] Archetype Specializations
The system that will allow players to specialize their characters will be deep and robust. Rather than having abilities and augmenting these through the use of a talent tree, such as in World of Warcraft, players will select all of their abilities through the specialization trees.[37]
Each archetype will have 3 specialization trees and players will be allowed to mix and match from these separate trees for their archetype. As players level, they will receive points to spend on these abilities, with an additional free ability every 5 levels.[38] Players will be able to master any one tree and half of another tree, or half of two and two-thirds of the other, or any combination of skills up to the number of points they have to spend.[39] See the individual archetypes for more information on the specializations.
[edit] Ability to Change Class
You will not be able to switch classes, but there will be up to 3 specializations per class.[40] Replayability will also be a major feature in the game.[8][9]
